Introduction to AI Agents

AI agents are systems that perceive their environment and take actions to achieve goals. Agents can be categorized into five types based on their complexity and capabilities. All these agents can improve their performance over time through learning and adaptation.

1. Simple Reflex Agents

These are the simplest agents. They make decisions based solely on the current sensory input (percepts) and ignore past experiences. They only work effectively in fully observable environments where the current state contains all necessary information.

Limitations of Simple Reflex Agents:

  • Very limited intelligence.
  • Cannot handle partially observable environments.
  • Can be large and complex to build.
  • Not adaptable to changes in the environment.

2. Model-Based Reflex Agents

Model-based agents can operate in partially observable environments. They maintain an internal state representing the current situation, based on past percepts and a model of the world (how the environment changes and how actions affect it).

Key Components:

  • Model: Knowledge about how the world works.
  • Internal State: A representation of the current state based on past observations.

3. Goal-Based Agents

Goal-based agents extend model-based agents by incorporating a "goal"—a description of desirable situations. They choose actions to reach this goal. This often involves searching and planning, considering sequences of actions.

4. Utility-Based Agents

Utility-based agents build upon goal-based agents by adding a utility function. This function measures the desirability of different states, allowing the agent to choose actions that not only achieve the goal but also maximize overall "success" or utility. This is useful when there are multiple ways to achieve a goal.

5. Learning Agents

Learning agents improve their performance over time by learning from experience. They have four main components:

  • Learning Element: Improves the agent's performance.
  • Critic: Evaluates the agent's performance.
  • Performance Element: Selects external actions.
  • Problem Generator: Suggests actions that lead to informative experiences.
